I have the honour to acknowledge Your Excel-
-lency's letter of 18th. June on the subject of the correspond-
-ence relative to the Supreme Court Registry.
2.
I learn with regret that Your Excellency has
dealt with the subject of the Supreme Court Vacations in your
communication to the Secretary of State on the subject of the
Registry without informing me of your intention so to do. I
regret it the more because in the 3rd. paragraph of my letter
of 6th. August on the question of the Vacation I expressly
requested Your Excellency in forwarding those papers to the
Secrevary of State to omit all reference, as I myself had done,
to the dispute which had arisen between ryself with the Chariber
of Commerce. The reason was I think obvious; the matter had
apparently settled down, and I was unwilling to revive a dis-
-cussion which if explained in all its details reflected little
credit on the then Chairman of the Chamber. This view was shared
by many leading members of the community, and I was satisfied
with that. But now that Your Pxcellency has referred to the
subject in your Despatch to the Secretary of State, it will be
unfortunately necessary for me to go fully into the whole natter
There are other matters referred to in my
letter of 12th. March, which, as a copy has mone to the Secre-
-tary of State, will have to be explained at length.

I learn for the first time from the letter
under reply that Your Fxcellency considers that my letter to
the "China Mail" of 27th. February contravened regulation 44 of
